Olive oil sector demands answers – Interprofessional Agreement has been awaiting approval for 8 months

Fenazeites, 12 November 2021: Fenazeites, as an associate member of CONFAGRI, expresses its surprise and indignation at the failure to approve the Interprofessional Agreement, which was submitted for consideration eight months ago to the Ministry’s Planning Office by AIFO – the Interprofessional Association of the Olive Sector.

The approval of this agreement, which includes significant financial support for the sector, is of great economic interest, as it will enable the development and strengthening of the Interprofessional Association’s capacity for intervention and, consequently, boost the sector.

FENAZEITES therefore demands a swift resolution to this obstacle.

This sectoral agreement promotes growth and appreciation of the olive sector.

The actions that AIFO proposes to carry out under this sectoral agreement will increase consumer awareness of the product, producing a positive economic effect in terms of increased demand for olive oil made in Portugal.

Through information, awareness and promotion campaigns in the domestic and international markets, consumers are provided with knowledge about the different categories of olive oil and their associated quality and health benefits, thereby attracting new consumers, retaining existing ones and, ultimately, promoting an increase in overall consumption.

By investing in technological innovation and research, we can make the sector more competitive, but also more efficient, environmentally sustainable and enhance its strong contribution to greenhouse gas fixation. Research into the nutritional and health properties of olive oil, combined with research into new types of packaging adapted to consumer demands, are key tasks in creating dynamics in the sector that bring the product closer to the consumer.
